OpenAI Just Raised $122 Billion. AI Search Is Now Permanent Infrastructure.
The largest funding round in history means ChatGPT isn't an experiment anymore. For local businesses, the implications are immediate.

Yesterday, OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion valuation. Read that number again. Eight hundred and fifty-two billion dollars. That makes OpenAI more valuable than every company in the S&P 500 except a handful of tech giants.
The investors: SoftBank put in $30 billion. Amazon committed $50 billion. Nvidia added $30 billion. Microsoft participated too. These are not speculative bets from angel investors hoping for a miracle. This is infrastructure money from companies that move global supply chains.
OpenAI now generates $2 billion in revenue per month. That's $24 billion annualized, up from $13.1 billion last year. ChatGPT has over 400 million weekly active users.
What This Means If You Run a Local Business
ChatGPT is not going away. This isn't a startup that might run out of runway. This is permanent infrastructure, funded at a level that rivals the GDP of small countries.
Every dollar invested means more development, more users, and more people asking AI for business recommendations instead of Googling. The shift from "some people use AI" to "half the population uses AI" is happening on a timeline measured in months, not years.
Right now, 45% of consumers already use AI assistants for local recommendations. ChatGPT recommends about 3-5 businesses per query. If yours isn't one of them, $122 billion just got invested in making sure more people skip you.
The Window
Here's the thing most business owners don't realize yet: showing up in ChatGPT is currently free. There's no ad slot to buy. No bidding war. If your site is properly optimized for AI, you get recommended organically.
That will change. OpenAI just launched ads (more on that in our next post). But right now, the organic window is still open. The businesses that optimize now will have established AI presence before the pay-to-play era begins. Just like the businesses that invested in SEO in 2005 dominated Google for the next decade.
$122 billion says this isn't going away. The question is whether your business will be visible when the next 400 million users ask.
